Advisory Roles
Paul’s advisory services range from expert briefings to specific projects working with in-house teams and wider partners to deliver solutions. Paul has also advised several infrastructure companies and construction firms on a variety of issues ranging from ESG drivers, future policy regulation, improving business development and future impacts on climate change. Some examples of Paul’s work is presented here together with Paul’s participation as an advisor to wider industry and government working groups.
Green Construction Board’s Infrastructure Working Group (member since 2014, ongoing). Providing guidance on carbon reductions and resilience in the infrastructure sector.
Member of Technical Advisory Panel for both first and second editions of PAS 2080: Measurement and management of carbon in the infrastructure sector. British Standard Institute, Green Construction Board (2015-16, and 2019-2020). Pro bono.
Paul advised Volvo Group specifically on its commitment to climate action with WWF. He advised on their foundation’s funding of projects and supported the Volvo Construction Equipment’s advocacy in the UK, specifically supporting PAS 2080. Paul chaired conferences in both Sweden and the UK and media briefings on the first fully electric quarry site (with Skanska) deploying Volvo’s electric equipment and trucks.
Cory Riverside Energy Paul was commissioned to write their first sustainability report. As part of this process and through consultation, working with the CEO and the Board, he helped designed their sustainable business strategy, conducting assessments against external sustainability frameworks like GRI, as well as the UN SDGs, and advising on an effective governance framework. The strategy was developed in consultation with the business and has resulted in measurable performance metrics for sustainability and action plans to improve operational performance. This positioned the company for a successful sale.
CIFF (Children International Fund Foundation – philanthropy in climate change). Paul advised on EU Policy mechanisms to accelerate the decarbonization of the cement sector.
Paul was tasked by Anglian Water to develop a methodology to assess their assets against future climate change. Paul partnered with the University of Leeds to provide them with different scenarios of climate impact over time. This helped their asset mangers understand and plan for future capital expenditure for adaptation.
For the social housing group, Orbit Housing, Paul worked with the CEO and their executive team to establish an environment management system and an over-arching approach to ESG (environment, social and governance) monitoring and reporting.
Paul was advisor to Climate-KIC’s European urban transitions programme where he assessed the feasibility of funding projects from industry and academia.
Paul advised on the WWF 50th Anniversary Communications Steering Group helping WWF develop its anniversary strategy and action plan ten years after leaving WWF.
Paul regularly works with start-ups and small businesses that are seeking advice to grow their business, recent examples include novel low carbon cements, and circular economy digital platforms.
Paul provides an advisory role working with organisation looking for market insights to tailor their offer, for example the British Standards Institute’s Sustainability Advisory Board.
