Revising CARES sustainability certification scheme to incorporate social value measures
The CARES sustainability certification scheme (CARES SCS) provides independent certification of the environmental performance of steel products. Increasingly clients are requiring construction companies and their value chains to demonstrate social value. Paul designed a process to understand what social value measures were relevant to steel producers. This included a literature review, telephone interviews with all parts of the value chain (clients, contractors, design engineers and steel producers), a stakeholder workshop and an assessment of steel makers’ ability to provide the data. A set of social metrics were developed. They will be incorporated into scheme and CARES auditors can verify the primary source of the data that companies may use to quantify their social value.
