Building resilience: The future role of the engineer!

Paul was invited as the international keynote speaker to Hong Kong’s Institute of Civil Engineers annual meeting: his lecture was based on this paper. Paul argues for the need for the 21st century engineer to be an integrator, overseeing and ensuring the projects sustainability goals are met. In this paper Paul introduces the concept of resilience and how we need to plan and design for resilience. Paul describes some of the issues the 21st Century engineer is tackling and some projects that give hope for an integrator approach that builds resilience.
